Domestic violence will affect 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men in their lifetime. While it may seem domestic violence is more prevalent in your culture than anyone else, all cultures and socioeconomic statuses are present in domestic violence. It’s a nasty cycle that usually starts with a young child witnessing it in their home. In the United States about 15 million children are exposed to violence each year.
Teens also experience abuse in their relationships as well. about 9.5% of high school students were physically abused on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend in the last year. 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men who ever experienced rape, physical violence and or stalking by a partner first experienced a form of partner violence between the ages of 11 and 17 years.
While there are other just as devastating issues in the world, domestic violence is one that is all too common and it is often swept under the rug, misunderstood, joked about, and not taken as seriously as it should be.
